Capturing Positive Changes on Camera

Capturing Positive Changes on Camera

Originally hailing from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, I spent my formative years there until circumstances led to what I can only describe as exile. Around 2006, amidst growing turmoil, my father, a journalist covering the police beat, faced mounting risks. This prompted us to seek refuge in El Paso, Texas. Initially resistant to the change, I gradually acclimated to my new surroundings.

Following in my father's footsteps, who transitioned from journalism to become a journalism instructor, felt like a natural progression for me. While he didn't expressly push me towards the field, his influence and example inspired me to pursue a similar path.

One particularly surreal moment stands out in my memory: witnessing my father collaborate with artist Ana Teresa Fernández to 'erase' a segment of the border fence by painting it the color of a 'perfect sky blue'. It was a poignant reminder of the power of art and the complexities of the borderland we call home." - @luis_pablo_hdz Portrait by @ga.velasquez
