📚"As a kid, I would ask my mom to take me to libraries or bookstores around El Paso to read some comic books. When I was older, I would go and venture with my friends around the city to visit each and every local comic shop. There is one in particular that I would go to called Black Sheep Comics. My weekly visits became a ritual, so I became friends with the owners and now visit them whenever I am in town.
🎓I eventually went on to write my master's thesis at UTEP on comic books and fandom, and later pursue a Ph.D at Texas A&M University. I am focusing on Latinx identity and representation in comic book media. This type of research hits home for me as a person from a border community. I also plan on using the #ElPasoStrong movement as a discussion point for the class I am teaching this semester.
